Hello!
I’m Julián Chen (Julz)
I'm a Brooklyn-born, NYC-based product developer and designer with a background in fine art and a lifelong obsession with making things, from mass consumer goods to personal trinkets. Growing up as a first-generation Asian American, I always had art as my outlet. I was rarely seen without a sketchbook, a set of Copic markers, graphite pencils, or Micron pens in hand. Drawing came naturally, so when I was introduced to painting in high school, I resisted at first. I wasn't ready to trade the precision of pen and paper for the unpredictability of paint. That hesitation didn't last long.
I quickly fell in love with painting's layered process, and the stories told through the work of artists like Rembrandt and Norman Rockwell. It became the medium that shaped the way I think about creativity. That passion led me to pursue art school—a path that felt unconventional as a first-generation Asian American. I attended The Cooper Union, where I expanded beyond painting into graphic design, printmaking, and sculpture. It was there that I discovered design and began noticing the beauty in everyday objects: street signs, posters, chairs, subway systems, and the countless things people interact with every day without a second thought. I became fascinated by how thoughtful design quietly shapes our experiences.
Today, I bring that same perspective into product development, creating tangible products at the intersection of apparel, commerce, and brand. I enjoy collaborating with partners, building relationships, and turning ideas into products people can wear, use, and connect with. Whether I'm developing a collection, refining a product, or building a brand story, I draw from my foundation as a painter, balancing creativity with craftsmanship and always paying attention to the details that make something meaningful. I’m currently a product developer at Overtime Sports, where I touch verticals across apparel, e-commerce, design, brand partnerships, social, and leagues. In my free time, I continue to create through freelance designing, painting, and learning new skills. Resume available upon request
